Aubry
Padmore was born on the island of Barbados, West Indies. He grew up
in a single-parent home in the parish of St. George (Greens village
to be specific) with his mother, grandmother and three brothers. He
is the last of six children, two of whom died, one at childbirth and
another prior to his arrival. He attended St. Judes Primary School in
St. George and after taking the common entrance examination attended
the then newly built St. George Secondary School. For the first five
years of Aubry's life, he existed as a mute. He was nicknamed "dummy"
by neighbors.
At the
age of eleven, Aubry left his mother's home to live with his favorite
cousin Esther in Glebe Land, St. George. During the years he lived with
Esther he was introduced to many civic, social and cultural organizations.
For example, he participated in the Boy Scouts program, 4H-Club, and
pursued training in shotokan karate and the kung-fu arts. He recalls
he was not an avid sportsman, but enjoyed an occasional game of cricket
and soccer. " I was quite skinny while growing up. " He fondly remembers
that he was taunted into running the 100-metres race at school by the
then-qualifying champion. As a joke, he ran the 100 meters and won the
race. He credits his participation in these programs for his go-getter
attitude. Aubry was also the youth fellowship President of his local
church, " The Church of God." He spent most days hanging out with his
cousin Judy and his best friends Steve Moore and Ainsley Burrowes.
After graduating
high school at the age of 18, Aubry migrated to the United States where
he continued to be a trailblazer. He re-qualified his high school education
by taking the GED. He was forced to do this because, as a foreigner,
his education was not considered for credit as a high school graduate.
Without the GED, he could not be considered for college. Upon completion
of his GED, he attended college and earned both a bachelors' and masters'
degree over a seven-year period. During his quest for higher education,
he was awarded the Presidential Scholarship for academic excellence
from Audrey Cohen College (currently renamed Metropolitan College of
New York (MCNY) ).
Aubry
is a founding board member of "Caring About People-Slomo-Productions,"
